How Our Meal Plans Help Fight Heart Disease

Lowering Your Risk  

Carrying extra weight, having high cholesterol, and/or high blood pressure are among the top risk factors for heart disease. You can address all of these risk factors by losing weight, eating heart-healthy nutrients, and restricting unhealthy ones.

At Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating, our dietitians have designed our meals based on scientific research to help you lose weight and reduce your risk factors. Our meal plans are similar to the DASH Diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Studies have shown that the DASH Diet lowered blood pressure within weeks while lowering bad cholesterol levels.

  Helping You Lose Weight  

Since losing weight requires balancing calorie intake and burning calories, our menus are calorie-controlled. We limit calories by providing nutrient dense foods, while limiting the fat and sugar content. Each menu on our low-fat program provides less than 25 percent of total calories from fat. Experts, including the American Heart Association, suggest such calorie-controlled, low-fat programs for healthy weight loss. As you lose weight, you reduce the strain on your heart and can lower cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and blood sugar.

Heart-Healthy Ingredients  

Our menus meet criteria from the American Heart Association (AHA) for a heart-healthy diet. Our meal plans provide less than 25% of calories from total fat and under 7% of total calories from cholesterol-raising saturated fat. They are also free from heart-damaging artificial trans fats and partially hydrogenated oils. Additionally, they provide less than 200 mg of cholesterol daily and are far lower than the typical American diet in sodium, which raises blood pressure and increases the risk of stroke and coronary heart disease. We also include heart-healthy omega-three fatty acids, antioxidants, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts to give you a well-rounded diet.
