A Closer Look at Blood Pressure

High Blood Pressure BlockquoteYour blood pressure describes the force of your blood against your blood vessel walls. High blood pressure puts a strain on your blood vessels and heart. Being overweight means that more blood is needed to supply your body tissues with oxygen and nutrients. The extra blood volume raises your blood pressure. Weight loss reduces the extra blood volume that you need and lowers your blood pressure. It also reduces the stress on your heart from pumping large volumes of blood.

The best way to lose weight is with a calorie-controlled (portion-controlled) diet, which is what the SSHE program provides. Our menus are sodium restricted, low in fat and include lean sources of protein and plenty of fiber to reduce hunger and increase satiety as you lose weight. Regular physical activity is also recommended to help lower blood pressure and lose weight, according to the American Heart Association.

Risk Factors

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a risk factor for:

  • Stroke
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Premature death

High blood pressure is unfortunately very common in America, one in three adults have it, and another third of adults have pre-hypertension and are at risk for high blood pressure. Although your genes affect your blood pressure, a healthy diet and weight can go a long way in lowering your blood pressure and supporting the effects of blood pressure-lowering medications. The SSHE program can help you eat right to get the nutrients you need to support a healthy blood pressure, as well as lose weight.

Choose the Right Food

SSHE meals are formulated according to scientific research on healthy eating to lose weight and lower blood pressure. In fact, SSHE is similar to the meal plan used in the most famous blood pressure-lowering clinical research trial in the United States, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, or DASH Diet. In the study, the DASH Diet lowered blood pressure within weeks for people who had moderately high or high blood pressure. Results from the study showed the DASH diet was as effective as blood pressure-lowering medications in some cases.

The DASH diet is based on fresh, nutrient-dense foods and restricted amounts of sodium, saturated fat, and sweets. Similar to the DASH diet, the SSHE meal plan, is higher in fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and whole grains, and lower in saturated fat, sweets, and red meat than the average American diet. These nutrient profiles lower blood pressure and support heart health.
