Hi, I’m Rene Ficek, registered dietitian nutritionist. No parent likes to see their kids come home with half eaten lunches, so this back to school season make sure to pack fun, healthy snacks and lunches that your kids will cheer for. It's easy with a few helpful tips!
My first tip is to get kids involved - give kids a choice! If they decide what to pack, they are much more likely to eat it. So, present a selection of "parent proof" snacks and options, from fruits, vegetables, and treats, giving your kids the option to pack their own lunch. Or better yet, devise their own menu for the week.
Secondly, remember that kids love to take a dip, as in they love to dip foods. Give them the option to dip away! Make lunch fun by packing veggies with ranch dip, chips with salsa, sliced apples with yogurt, or even some hummus with vegetables and pita. It's a great way to make sure that your child gets more vegetables in their diet!
And my last tip is to let kids taste the rainbow, and no, I'm not talking about Skittles. Kids, even adults, eat with their eyes first, so captivate meals with color and keep meals visually appealing. Choose fruits and vegetables with different colors, choose wheat bread over white bread, and you can even include some colorful trail mix.
