Hi, I’m Rene Ficek, registered dietitian nutritionist. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we would like to share some healthy eating habits for breast cancer prevention. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables with prevent both breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence, but the following foods can provide nutrients that can improve breast health and also boost the immune system.
Our first food is broccoli. Broccoli has been shown to block tumor growth and prevent the further spread of cancer if it does occur. In fact, most cruciferous vegetables, like cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower also offer this benefit.
The next food we have is flaxseed. When flaxseed is milled, lignan becomes available for the body to use. Lignan may decrease cancer growth and is the perfect food for breast cancer prevention.
And our most important food that we have is berries. Anthocynanins are potent antioxidants found in berries and they are actually responsible for that color that you see in berries, the redish pigment in strawberries, cherries, blackberries and raspberries. These antioxidants can help prevent breast cancer and should be a part of your diet regularly.
In addition to these foods, research has shown us that other factors, such as eating a low-fat diet, maintaining a healthy weight, drinking green and black tea, and eating a high fiber diet, can also help protect against breast cancer.
