Hi. I'm Rene Ficek, registered dietitian nutritionist.
September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, so we wanted to provide a couple important tips to help you and your family stay happy and healthy.
First, and foremost, parents need to set a good example, which is the single-most effective way to improve a child's diet and level of physical activity.
Eating meals together as a family can have profound effects on a child's eating habits, overall health and weight. In fact, children and teens who have family meals eat better, feel better about themselves, get along better with other people and do better in school. It allows everyone to come to the table hungry and leave full and satisfied, instead of thinking about food in between meals. This helps both adults and children eat the right amount of food for them.
Lastly, we all need to use a more positive eating message, as encouraging a positive attitude toward food is critical because dieting and food restrictions during childhood may actually promote weight gain and negatively affect later eating behaviors.
