Healthy Tips for Valentine’s Day – Video Transcript

Hi! I'm Rene Ficek, registered dietitian nutritionist. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and it’s likely that you and your significant other or friend will be dining out and enjoying each other’s company. Here are a few tips to dine out, yet still stay on track with healthy eating.

Tip 1: Avoid Fried Foods

Our first tip is to make sure when you start off with an appetizer, you avoid fried foods. You can easily consume a day’s worth of calories with one dish of fried foods. They act like sponges for unhealthy fats and oils.

Tip 2: Enjoy a Light Salad before Your Meal

My next tip is to enjoy a light salad before your meal. Research shows that consuming a salad before a meal can actually reduce the calorie intake for that meal. This is likely due to the filling factor of the fiber in leafy greens.

Tip 3: Don’t Skip Dessert!

And my last tip is don’t skip dessert, you can actually enjoy a light refreshing fruit based dessert like berries or chocolate covered strawberries that can add heart healthy antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins and minerals to your day.
