Hi. I'm Rene Ficek, registered dietitian nutritionist.
Believe it or not, school bells are going to start ringing in just a few short days. With kids going back to school, it is the perfect time for parents to start thinking healthy. So when planning snacks and lunches, keep a few key points in mind. First, snacks should resemble real food, and secondly, they should mean minimally processed.
So some of the snack favorites that we have here are yogurt and cheese. Dairy is always a favorite of kids. Granola bars with minimal ingredients, like just fruit and nuts. Nuts themselves are a great option, like pistachios. Trail mix, kids can make their own trail mix, and they love doing that. Or hummus with vegetables or humus and crackers, always a good option too.
And another tip for healthy snacking is to make sure that you choose sugars from natural sources instead of added sugar sources. So instead of fruit snacks, choose dried fruit, or instead of store bought popsicles, choose ones made at home with real pureed fruit.
