Dear readers, you won't believe what I've been up to lately. Not long after I had my knee replaced, I'm setting out where many 80-year olds don’t usually go. Tomorrow night I'll be at the historic Wrigley Field throwing out the first pitch at the Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers 7:05 PM game. Yes, you heard me right...throwing out the first pitch for the Cubs game! Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd do something like this.
When I went to church this week, when the congregation was asked if anyone had any announcements, I had to tell them about my opportunity and I told them that they don't have to pray for me since it won't help. The entire church laughed.
I've been practicing pitching with my grandson, Ryan Borgstrom, since he's the family baseball expert. He brought me a baseball glove, since I've never had one in my life. Boy, it was big! He showed me how to wind up and throw it overhand. After trying it a few times, we gave up on that method, and decided I should throw it underhanded since that's what I'm most comfortable doing. So, every day, I go up to the court we have above our house and practice pitching the ball.
Ryan plays baseball for the Morris Redskin team, playing 2nd baseman. This year he will be a senior on the varsity team and has been playing baseball since he was 4 years old...for 14 years!
He's getting me prepared to throw out the first pitch at the Chicago Cubs game and with all his help, I think I'm ready. I can't wait...I'm so excited! I just wish my friend Ron Santo was alive to see it. He would think it was a hoot. I'm sure he'll be smiling down on me Wednesday night with pride and joy as I approach the pitcher's mound, decked out in my Cubs jersey and baseball hat. He may even have me on 3rd base, instead of a pitcher, right after his own heart.
I will be escorted to the mound by one of my granddaughters, Erin Borgstrom (Ryan's older sister), who lives in Chicago and works for the company. You may have seen her on a company commercial or heard her on the radio.
It will be a family affair, my daughter Paula from Texas and her husband, J.D., will be in attendance. Also, our good friends Sharon and Wayne Alsvig, will be attending the game too.
I'm sure it will be an exiting evening that will be a memorable experience not only for me, but for my entire family and all my friends. Not too many people are asked to do this, and I feel it is quite an honor. I just hope I can make it to home plate!
You may want to tune into see me on TV, since I may be on Comcast TV.
