Last night I had the pleasure of meeting our 10 LaSalle County residents we selected to participate in our 2012 Slim Down Contest. What a great group of people! They met us at our company headquarters in Ottawa to weigh-in, listen to a registered dietitian from Ottawa Regional Hospital and have their questions answered before we sent them on their way with their meals.
In case you forgot, the Seattle Sutton's 2012 Slim Down Contest is a 15-week weight loss challenge for 10 contestants who will compete for prizes and improve their health by making a positive lifestyle change. The contest runs from January 9, 2012 through April 23, 2012.
We will provide the 10 lucky contestants with our 1,200-calorie meal plan. Meals included in the contest are every breakfast, lunch and dinner for the contestants (21 meals per week), a total of 315 meals in all, for the entire contest. Contestants are to add 2 glasses of fat-free (skim) milk each day and a minimum of eight glasses of water per day.
This contest is going to be so much fun. Every one of them is eager to do their best and to make a lifestyle change once and for all. I know they can do it! I'm overjoyed at the possibility of helping these 10 people change their lives for good. Healthy eating is essential in overall good health and good health is the most important asset one has in life, without it, nothing else matters.
I know taking on a weight loss challenge like this is very courageous, especially in a public forum like this contest. Habits can be difficult to break, but they are breakable and health can be re-gained through healthy eating. I've seen it time and again as a registered nurse and through helping people with our freshly prepared meals the last 26 years. I want each and every one of our 10 contestants to succeed and live a healthier life for them and their families.
Seattle Sutton's 2012 Slim Down contest is the first of its kind for the local community. We had our first-ever and quite successful weight loss contest for the Chicago area in 2010, when 10 contestants lost a total of 372 pounds in 14 weeks.
The 10 Seattle Sutton's 2012 Slim Down contestants competing for improved health and great prizes are:
Andrea Edwards, 48 of Ottawa
Bob Beutke, 55 of Grand Ridge
Bob Hornbeck, 55 of Marseilles
Chris Dougherty, 45 of Ottawa
Heather Treest, 40 of Ottawa
Janna Trager, 44 of Grand Ridge
Kim Farrell, 52 of Ottawa
Kristen McGill, 34 of Ottawa
Ryan Ramon, 38 of Streator
Sean McGettigan, 46 of Ottawa
The contestant who loses the most weight based on percentage of body weight lost will be named the grand prize winner and will take home the $1,500 cash prize. Second place prize will win a trip for two to Las Vegas, including airfare and hotel accommodations. Third place prize will win a year membership to the Ottawa YMCA. Fourth place prize will win an overnight trip package to Bettendorf, IA including hotel accommodations, dinner and breakfast for two.
Contestants will also have blood work completed, once at the beginning of the contest and once at the end, to measure cholesterol (including LDL, HDL, triglycerides and total cholesterol), fasting blood sugar and AlC, as well as their blood pressure taken. This is a free service provided by Ottawa Regional Hospital & Healthcare Center, as part of the contest. Contestants will be weighed each week at the Ottawa distributor location when they pick up their SSHE meals.
The 10 contestants were chosen from hundreds of entries accepted from October 26, 2011 through November 15, 2011 from web, mail and walk-in entries. She made healthy eating her mission in life long before anyone else did, in hopes of helping her own obese father. A registered nurse by training and entrepreneur at heart, she lives, eats and breathes everything about healthy eating and helping to improve people’s eating habits and overall health. She enjoys never having to bother with grocery shopping, cooking and counting calories. Her favorite SSHE meal, although it’s hard to pick just one, is the Potato Gnocchi with Basil Pesto Sauce.
