Oh, Nuts!

New research suggests people who eat a diet rich in nuts, including peanuts (which are actually legumes), are less likely to die from heart disease or cancer. The more nuts consumed, the greater the apparent benefit.

Nut eaters also tend to also be healthier when it comes to their overall lifestyle habits – smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise habits, being obese and other elements of their diet, such as consuming more fruits and vegetables. The study also suggests people who tend to eat a lot of nuts are less likely to put on weight and have a thinner body type.  

The New England Journal of Medicine published research, compiled data from nurses and other healthcare workers who were tracked since the 1980s, suggests eating nuts regularly may lower the risk of common health problems such as heart disease, colon cancer and type II diabetes.  

Nuts, once lauded for being unhealthy and full of fat, are now considered a darling in the food and nutrition world. I say…it’s about time! These nutrition powerhouses are packed with vitamins, nutrients and as the new research suggests, cancer fighting compounds plus they have been found to prevent heart disease deaths too.

Nuts really got a bad rap for years, and that’s a shame. They are a wholesome food full of nutrition.  Same thing goes for eggs, what a wonderful food that was demonized for years and now again is considered a “health food”…while I never thought of eggs as a bad food.  

I’ve known for years that nuts are nutritious and good for you -- in moderation, of course. Some nuts are better than others, like many things.  But a small handful once a day, not only packs protein, but also magnesium, copper, phosphorus, calcium, iron, manganese and so many vitamins plus much, much more.  

So, how nuts were demonized is beyond me. However, with this new research out, I hope the bad image will soon disappear entirely and more people will look to nuts to include in their healthy, balanced diets.
