North Dakota, home of my birthplace, is near and dear to my heart. I haven’t lived there for more than 60 years but whenever I go back it’s like going home again. It really brings me a sense of peace and I still love the rolling prairie and appreciate the beautiful wide-open space out there.
Oh, what fun I had with my daughters Paula, Ruth and Sarah in North Dakota last week! We visited my alma mater, The University of Jamestown (formerly called Jamestown College) and many relatives in Gackle where I grew up. We also stopped off for the famous buffalo dinner in Streeter, population of about 200 people, where the townspeople all pitch in and make the most delicious homemade buffalo dinner drawing 1,500 people from near and far.
I had to laugh, the girls all bought buffalo hats at a buffalo museum before we went to Streeter and they wore those hats to the dinner. What fun!
The University of Jamestown was a wonderful stop along our way. We toured the campus and even had lunch with the president, Dr. Badal. The hospitality they showed us was top-notch, just like the school and nursing program. I believe, and I may be a little biased, that the school offers the best nursing program in the country or world! It was so much fun to see Orlady Hall where the nursing clinical department is housed, we so enjoyed that portion of our trip. The technology the school offers those students is simply amazing and truly cutting edge.
It was a quick trip, but we were so glad we made it together. The girls may have never gone if it weren’t for me suggesting the trip. I think it’s been many years -- since 2004 when we all went out there for a visit. It was right after my book was published. We’re very much looking forward to heading back to North Dakota in June for a family wedding. My niece’s son is getting married and we’ll all be out there to celebrate.
