If you asked me 15 weeks ago if the Seattle Sutton's 2012 Slim Down contestants for LaSalle County would lose more than 500 pounds during the contest, I think I may have scoffed at the idea. Yes, even me, the ultimate optimist given the enormous amount of weight 500 pounds is! Well, I'm happy to report that our weight loss challenge came to a conclusion last night with the final weigh in and the nine contestants lost a total of 510.5 pounds in 15 weeks! Terrific job everyone!
Sean McGettigan of Ottawa, lost the most weight based on percentage of body weight, making him the first place winner. He lost a total of 31.22 percent of body weight. And, besides the prize of improving his health and getting down to the weight he was when he entered the military in the 1980's, he also won $1,500. McGettigan was interested in the challenge as a way to re-gain his health, become more active and to be a good role model to his four kids aged 10 to 14.
Sean, I think you did just that and then some! I know your wife, kids, family and friends are all proud of you...I know we all are proud of what you accomplished!
The two contestants who lost the second and third most weight based on percentage of body weight lost also won prizes, a trip for two to Las Vegas, including airfare and hotel accommodations and a year membership to the Ottawa YMCA.
The second place winner is Kim Farrell from Ottawa, she lost a total of 30.59 percent of body weight and dropped 57.5 pounds. Farrell was dedicated to a lifestyle change, improving her health and being around longer to enjoy her family. She also celebrated her birthday with us last night, complete with an apple with a candle in it! I hope this was your best birthday ever, Kim. You deserve celebrating and enjoying your success.
The third place winner is Ryan Ramon from Streator, he lost a total of 30.52 percent of body weight and he lost the most weight of any contestant -- 88.5 pounds. Ramon is interested in continuing his weight loss effort and losing 10 more pounds. His goal is to be the weight he was when he got out of the military in 1995. Way to go, Ryan, you stuck to it the entire time and were dedicated to succeeding in your lifestyle change. And, you rallied support from friends, co-workers and the community, who also joined the program...you are truly remarkable.
The fourth place winner is Janna Trager of Grand Ridge, she lost a total of 23.86 percent of body weight and she lost a total of 47 pounds. She not only lost weight, but she also won an overnight trip package to Bettendorf, Iowa, including hotel accommodations, dinner and breakfast for two. Your determination showed through Janna, way to go!
Ottawa Regional Hospital and Healthcare Center measured contestants fasting glucose (blood sugar), A1C, fractionated cholesterol (total cholesterol, LDL and HDL) and triglycerides at the beginning of the contest and at the conclusion to measure their improvement of health. Blood pressure was also recorded at the beginning and end of the contest. Contestants were also closely monitored each week and they weighed-in at their Ottawa distributor location when they picked up their SSHE meals. I'm looking forward to sharing their improved lab results with you just as soon as we receive the final numbers. I know you all will be impressed!
Everyone did a remarkable job staying focused and attaining their goals to lose weight and improve their health. Im so glad that we were able to help by having the contest and providing our meals. After all, without good health nothing else matters.
Here's to all the other contestants who are winners in our book, even if they didn't rank in the top four and receive prizes, they all gained in improving their health, learned about portion control and implemented a new, healthy lifestyle:

She made healthy eating her mission in life long before anyone else did, in hopes of helping her own obese father. A registered nurse by training and entrepreneur at heart, she lives, eats and breathes everything about healthy eating and helping to improve people’s eating habits and overall health. She enjoys never having to bother with grocery shopping, cooking and counting calories. Her favorite SSHE meal, although it’s hard to pick just one, is the Potato Gnocchi with Basil Pesto Sauce.
