Wellness/Health Related Conditions

A healthy, balanced diet is helpful for preventing diseases and improving health conditions. Numerous scientifically valid studies have proven it. For optimal health and wellness, nutrition is critical.

Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating (SSHE) meals are prepared using the nutritional guidelines of health and nutrition experts. Meals are analyzed to ensure we serve what reputable medical experts recommend one should eat for optimal health.

Medical conditions can be helped and greatly improved through changing lifestyle, including improving eating habits. We’ve seen it time and again with our freshly prepared, healthy meals.

If you or someone you know are considering a lifestyle change and have health conditions, here’s some basic information as it relates to your health and our meals. Specific questions can be directed to Paula Heaton, RN, BSN at 817-689-0265. Or, contact your medical provider after printing out a copy of our nutritional analysis to share with him/her.

Diabetes

A balanced diet is one of the key elements that help keep your blood sugar and diabetes under control. With our meal plan, you can be assured that you are always receiving calorie-controlled meals that are nutritionally balanced. SSHE recommends that you consult with your physician or registered dietitian regarding which calorie plan to select. Some diabetics on our meals have been able to reduce or eliminate their insulin and oral medication.

The overwhelming majority of Type II Diabetics will benefit from weight loss. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), Type II Diabetes accounts for 90-95% of all cases of diabetes and approximately 90% of patients with Type II diabetes are overweight. If you are overweight, losing some weight could help you better manage your diabetes, according to the ADA.

Weight loss in diabetes helps in two ways: it lowers insulin resistance, thus allowing your natural insulin to do a better job at lowering blood glucose levels and it may allow for reduction or elimination of medications to treat diabetes. It also improves blood fat levels (i.e., cholesterol) and blood pressure.

High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all animal tissues, including meat, fish, poultry, egg yolk, and dairy products. If you consume too much cholesterol, which is easy to do if you don't pay attention to what you eat, it will deposit itself in your arteries. By doing this, it causes your arteries to become narrow and clogged, putting you at risk for a heart attack and other forms of heart disease. The SSHE meal plan is low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol - the perfect combination for a heart-healthy diet.

Our meals also provide sources of Omega-3 fatty acids in menu items containing flax seed, salmon, tuna, walnuts and green leafy vegetables. Foods with these types of ingredients have been found to have a positive impact on high cholesterol and heart health.

High Blood Pressure/Heart Disease

Our meals have been found to be ideal for cardiac patients and many have seen great improvements in their health by following the plan.

The SSHE meal plan is sodium restricted, low fat, low cholesterol and calorie and portion-controlled. The combination of probable weight loss and sodium restricted meals could help lower blood pressure and decrease heart problems. Following our plan and eating our meals has the potential of reducing or eliminating some cardiac medications.

Remember: Every pound of weight lost is one less pound of workload and stress on the heart!

We know more people today take Coumadin than ever before. To help it work effectively, it is important to keep your Vitamin K intake as consistent as possible. We suggest you watch how often and how much you eat foods high in Vitamin K. It is key to take the correct dose of Coumadin at the same time every day and have your PT/INR labs checked regularly.

Take a copy of our nutritional analysis with you to your next appointment and show your physician our meal plan’s analysis. Once you review it, you can determine if this is a good choice for you. Many people on Coumadin have been successful on SSHE and have been pleased with the results.
